Arrive in Sarajevo for the first day of the dub and mix on documentary feature, Pretty Village http://www.prettyvillagefilm.com/
It's nearly a hundred years since the First World War started here in Sarajevo with the assisination of the heir to the Austrian throne Franz Ferdinand, and just to remind me, I'm travelling on Austrian airlines sitting next to Bosnian artist Abida Ruppert who's preparing an exhibition of her paintings inspired by that event; large canvases of fabric and oils, dreamlike landscapes, layered textures of history and memory, a strip of cloth, a cross, a field of mud, droplets of blood.
On the ground the city is more concerned with the world cup than the commemoration of that terrible event whose consequences are still felt in this beautiful city where the evidence of war is etched on the fabric of almost every building - bullet holes, bomb damage and sectarian graffiti.
But it's a beautiful city too - a unique mix of East and West; it's skyline dotted with the outlines of churches and minarets; it's streets a collage of concrete communist blocks of flats and offices, crumbling Austro_Hungarian banks and villas and narrow Ottoman streets now strung with the flags of a dozen different and nations as Bosnia celebrates its first ever appearance in a world cup competition.
We meet with Alan Omerovic, our sound designer, for a chat to plan the week.
We're all excited - two years of work to wrap up over the next few days. Sad too - it's been a long, emotional journey.
We hope more than anything that we can tell the stories of the people of our Pretty Village, Kevljani, with honesty and integrity - how they've re-built their lives after the trauma of exile and war. As we sit discussing the week, the great Hungarian film maker, Bela Tar comes and sits next to us - he's in town teaching at the Film School here.
I contemplate requesting a selfie with him but decide I'll save the request for later in the week - watch this space...
