In partnership with Creative Europe Desk UK Wales

May 29, 2015
Registrations from 12.30pm
Chapter Arts Centre Cardiff

Dogfen Cymru invite you to a one-day symposium to discuss the future of documentary film in Wales. Drawing together a range of talent from Wales and beyond, the day will be an opportunity to meet a diverse collection of individuals who share your passion for documentary.

The focus of the day will be on:
  •  Strengthening the community of documentary film makers currently working in Wales
  • Exploring ways of building the audience for documentary film in Wales
  • Discussing future plans for supporting documentary film within the Welsh production sector
We are pleased to announce that the day will include presentations by two key figures in European Documentary who will share their experience of developing documentary film networks.

  • Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) is an internationally recognised documentary research centre at Edinburgh College of Art specialised in documentary training, production and distribution. It was set up in 2004. Their aim is to stimulate and inspire the documentary scene in Scotland and beyond through focus on creative excellence and clear international outlook. They also aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Their films have played at major film festivals, such as Sundance, Cannes, Hotdocs, Tribeca, Full Frame, Silverdocs, IDFA, Cinéma du Reel, Vision du Réel, Leipzig and have picked up major awards and nominations. SDI Productions Ltd was set up in 2007 in order to develop a slate of feature documentaries and enable ambitious co-productions such as The New Ten Commandments, Future My Love, and I Am Breathing. Noe is an experienced producer and executive producer on the international scene, is research professor at the Edinburgh College of Art and founder of SDI.

  • Paul Pawels is the Director of the European Documentary Network (EDN). Before becoming the EDN Director Paul Pauwels was Managing Director for the Belgium production company Congoo bvba. Paul has a long track record of working with international documentary co-productions from both a commissioning and production point of view. He has been the managing director of the media academy ETMA, commissioning editor for the Belgium public service broadcaster VRT and has almost 30 years of experience with producing documentaries for the national and international market.

The symposium will also feature a discussion led by the current members of Dogfen Cymru, which will focus on the question of how to develop a documentary film network for Wales.

The day will conclude with an evening screening of Lambert and Stamp a documentary telling the story of how aspiring film makers Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert, searching a subject for their underground movie, wound up discovering, mentoring and co-managing English rock band The Who.
